TitleLetters from John Tydeman, radio producer responsible for the serialisation of the Adrian Mole books for Radio 4.
DescriptionThe correspondence, which is written in an informal and amusing style, reflects the friendship between John Tydeman and Sue Townsend, and includes a number of letters written to Sue Townsend's alter ego, Adrian Mole. Subjects includes: the commission and development of the original Thirty Minute Theatre radio broadcast of 'The Secret Diary of Nigel Mole' on 2 Jan 1982, including the engagement of Nicholas Barnes as the voice of Nigel Mole, who Tydeman claims is 'an excellent young chap, exactly the age of Nigel Mole and he even has a spot on his chin!' (/1 - 4); the commission and development of 'The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole', including discussions surrounding Mole's name change from Nigel to Adrian (/5 - 7, /9 and /13); a letter written in reply to Adrian Mole thanking him for his poem entitled 'Norway' which was later included in 'The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole' (/10); a photocopy of Adrian Mole's Norway letter to John Tydeman (/11); the serialisation of 'The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole' (/20, /22, /25, /27, /29, /31 - 32); a mock reference for Adrian Mole addressed to Mr Gorbachov (with Russian translation), presumably written to tie-in with 'A. Mole in Moscow', the third part of a series of three Adrian Mole monologues entitled 'Mole on Pirate Radio 4' (/39); and praise for 'Ghost Children' (/46). The file predominantly contains incoming letters, with only a small number of photocopied letters sent by Sue Townsend to John Tydeman in the voice of Adrian Mole.
